Frequently Asked Questions

West Coast Swing (WCS) is a modern style of swing dancing that evolved from a smooth style of Lindy Hop here in California and adapted into its own dance form back in the ’50s and ’60s.

Danced to a wide range of music genres, it is one of the most versatile social dances today. Known for its smooth and stretchy feel, WCS affords dancers lots of room for improvisation, creativity, and musicality. Whether you like blues, jazz, hip hop, R&B, or country, you will find WCS music that you will love dancing to.

Jump on in! We have weekly beginner classes at Westie Groove Wednesdays.

No experience of any kind is needed.
You do not need to bring a partner.

Our teachers will make it fun and have you dancing in no time. We know it’s scary, but we all started at the beginning too. Our community is friendly and welcomes the opportunity to dance with and encourage beginners.

WCS is a casual dance, and we tend to wear stuff we feel good moving in. That may mean jeans and T-shirts or something fancier. We encourage you to be you and to express yourself.

Most of us dance in particular dance shoes, but sneakers and dress shoes are just as appropriate. Make sure they will stay on your feet and not stick to the floor.

A quick check of personal hygiene will make you a more popular partner. Leave the heavy perfumes and colognes at home, don’t forget deodorant, and if you tend to sweat a lot, bring an extra shirt.

Don’t be afraid to ask! Everyone is here to dance. There is no need to wait on the sidelines. We encourage you to dance with everyone, yet it’s completely acceptable to decline a dance without explanation.

Be mindful of your partner and others on the floor. Run your slot in the same direction as everyone else and keep an eye out to avoid collisions.

Thank your partner at the end of a dance. If they ask to be escorted off floor, please oblige. If not, offer a thank you, a high five, or a hug and off you go to find your next partner.

Don’t be afraid to dance with someone: older than you, younger than you, shorter than you, taller than you, better than you, less experienced than you. You get the idea…some of your best dances will happen when you least expect it.

Please take a moment to read our Code of Conduct to familiarize yourself with our expectations of our community members.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the SD Westie leadership team. We want you here, and we want you comfortable and happy.
